With a brand new
congress and a clean sweep of ministers
and heads of agencies, Oscar Arias
Sanchez was inaugurated President of
Costa Rica today, ushering in a long
needed change to this central american
country of more than four million.
We recall that only weeks after the last
inauguration of former president Pacheco
in the year 2002, the offices of Luis
Enrique Villalobos were raided and shut
down by an arbitrary and illegal police
action led by, among others, Minister of
Security Rogelio Ramos, whose other
claims to fame include raiding bars and
tourist hot spots and the deportation of
illegal immigrants, but failed to stem
the rising tide of the real delinquents
on the streets.
However, what comes around, goes around,
and we can report to you this evening
that both Pacheco and Ramos, along with
the long list of losers who stumbled
incompetently for four years and hurt
many people along the way, have
themselves been deported from the
government and into the trash heap of
history.
Good riddance!
In other matters, we can inform you that
defense lawyers followed up the recent
high court decision with an official
petition to the Tribunal, that they
respect the order issued by the
Constitutional Court and immediately
assign a date of trial. No response
yet, but with the government's new look,
perhaps we can be more hopeful that our
logjam could break.
Let us begin the final phase without
further delay.
We will keep you informed.
Thank you.
