Osvaldo
Villalobos Hires
New Legal Defense
Team
After
careful consideration, and quoting the
official notice provided to the court, due
to "strictly personal and professional
reasons", Osvaldo Villalobos has made the
difficult decision to dismiss the legal team
of Coto/Mejias/Garcia, effective
immediately, terminating and fully
satisfying all lawyer/client contractual
obligations between them.
A new
team of lawyers has been hired. They are:
Lic.
Juan Tovar - who has a previous working
relationship with the family, will deal with
the administrative responsibilities of the
new team and will handle the civil law
aspects of the case.
Lic.
Rodrigo Araya - former public defender, now
in private practice, most notably now
defending Father Minor Calvo against
homicide charges in the Parmenio Medina
case, will be leading the defense against
the criminal charges in the case.
Lic.
Federico Campos - public defender for 13
years, professor of criminal law at the
University of Costa Rica, will be
co-defending Osvaldo against the criminal
charges.
And
finally, remaining on the legal team and
bringing with him the in-depth knowledge and
experience of the past four years will be
Lic. Alexander Ruiz, who will handle the
fraud charges associated with the investor
querellas (criminal accusations of fraud
made by the claimants).
Lic.
Araya and Campos have worked together
previously, and the team was carefully built
with an emphasis on complementary legal
skills and fostering a cohesive working
relationship. We know that the new team has
much work ahead of them and we wish them God
speed. As it turns out, the few months
still remaining until the start of trial
will come in handy.
Before
we close, we would like to remind all of you
that the meeting between all the lawyers and
the judge scheduled for this coming Monday,
September 11, is nothing more than a
scheduling session to coordinate the agendas
of the many lawyers involved in this case.
There will be no significant petitions,
points of law, or any other important legal
matter discussed or considered during this
planning session.
No one
should have any expectations whatsoever for
any surprise announcements or decisions as a
result of this meeting. We will of course
provide a report of that event later that
same evening.
