A New Year with
New Hope
There was
something different about the stroke of
midnight last night. The exhaustion of the
past four years, a new sense of hope and an
old sense of fear, could this new calendar
contain our resolution within its pages?
Nothing
that could be written could begin to explain
the collective emotions and experiences of
the thousands of people who were thrown into
personal and economic turmoil by the
shocking events that began in July, 2002.
Few of us would have believed that we would
still be here four years later, still
waiting, but still hopeful.
Almost
incredibly, Luis Enrique has remained by our
side through it all. Whatever is said about
the man, no one can doubt his commitment to
prove his innocence. It is noteworthy that
someone in his position, at this time and in
this place, surrounded by so many others who
tried to imitate him, but in the end were
just thieves, common criminals, maintains
his communication and commitment with his
creditors. If nothing else, this fact alone
demonstrates that this man is truly
outstanding, and this situation is very
different than all the others. And so far
at least... we are the lucky ones, as crazy
as that may sound.
Likewise,
Osvaldo has been a good brother and fine
soldier, single-handedly confronting the
lies of their accusers, among them,
shamefully, investors themselves who had
once done business with brother Enrique.
For the lies of the government pale in
comparison with the lies from those who
shook your hand with a smile month after
month for many years.
We begin
this new year with new hope that indeed,
resolution might be near. But first, we
have a trial to witness. The prosecution,
headed by Fiscal Walter Espinoza will
present the government's case. The
individual accusers, those investors who
have allowed or directed their lawyers to
charge Osvaldo with the crime of fraud will
follow. And finally, the defense will have
their opportunity to refute their accusers
and present its case before the three judges
who will decide Osvaldo's fate... and by
doing so will decide Enrique's fate... and
our fate.
For in
effect, we share in the outcome of this
trial alongside Osvaldo and Enrique. We may
not be named, but our economic future, and
in varying degrees, how the rest of our
lives will be lived, also depends on the
courtroom skills of Osvaldo's lawyers... and
in the hands of three judges.
And in
truth. And with God.
